Chermside Community Planning vision to be launched

The Brisbane City Council is due to launch the results of their Community Planning vision, which is the result of a consultative process of which Jarrod Sweetman was the BNCC representative. The vision will be launched at the 7th Brigade Park on Saturday 15th November 2008, from 11am to 3pm.

Gateway Motorway Northern Upgrade - Update

The Gateway Motorway Northern Planning committee (of which Charles Hollis is the BNCC rerpresentative), has

Main Roads is currently in Stage 2 of the planning study which covers 16 km of the Gateway Motorway from Nudgee to the Bruce Highway. This stage of the planning study involves developing upgrade options to improve safety on the motorway and cater for increased travel demand as South East Queensland’s population continues to grow. Charles Hollis (of the Executive) is the BNCC representative on the committee.

As part of the Gateway Motorway North Planning Study, Main Roads has prepared a draft plan to upgrade a 3 km section of the Gateway Motorway, including the Nudgee Road Interchange.

Key features of the Nudgee Interchange Upgrade include:

modified connection to join new Gateway Upgrade Project
new one-way north-bound collector-distributor road
new north-bound off-ramp from the Gateway Upgrade Project to new collector-distributor road
realigned motorway
retain off-ramp connection to Service Centre and Nudgee Road
upgraded intersection at Nudgee Road and Childs Road
new motorway overpass for Nudgee Road
new south-bound on and off-ramps at Nudgee Road
new north-bound on-ramp from Nudgee Road to collector-distributor road
new north-bound collector-distributor on-ramp merge with Gateway Motorway
new intersection on Nudgee Road with on and off-ramps.

The change from the old gateway northbound merge to ONE lane before before is a shocking oversight of the use of that section. An average trip from the airport to nudgee before the 'upgrade' was 1/2 hour now this time has been extended because of the merge to one lane then out to three lanes then back to two lanes all withing approx 1klm. I would suggest that most regular drivers will now use the back way behind the service centre at nudgee to access the motorway to avoid 2 bottlenecks. common sense would suggest that this would have been a bad idea from the begining.

Your Charles Hollis and Anna Bligh need to come for a drive along the "NEW" Nudgee Gateway Artial section at 4.30 to 6pm Monday to Friday and just see how poorly this road infrastrure way planned. From Eagle Farm to Bracken Ridge now takes 40mins. We go from 2 lanes down to 1 lane up to 3 lanes then down 2 lanes all within 500mtrs. How could this be such an oversight and even considered being called an upgrade. At Bare Minium it should be 3 lanes right through to Deagon Deaviation have you forgotten the added pressure of the Brisbane entertainment Centre being on our Beloved Northside- stop spending some much on the Southside road structure and fix up your appalling mess at Nudgee. You just pushed the traffic bottleneck 500 mtrs down the raod from the airport roudabout to behind Nudgee and left it what a disgrace! The whole of Brisbane knows you are 15 years behind acknowledging our roads are not sufficient enough to cater for the influx of people moving to Qld. The Brisbane Gateway shld have been 3 lanes back when you first started it you have land galour to correct it get your surveyers out or are you going to wait another 15 years for the obvious to be achieved. What do we need to get it done Japanese tourist to complain it took them to long to get to the North Coast from the Airport then we be upgraded like the Gateway to the Gold Coast.

Bracken Ridge to Eagle Farm. Saves 10 mins in the morning Southbound. Adds 30 mins in the afternoon Northbound. Net improvement: My journey is 20mins longer each day. Thanks Anna... you w**ker! Screw you come the next election.

I live in the outer northern suburbs and travel daily each workday along the motorway. The trip southbound has improved (about 15 mins)each morning since the opening of the new roadworks. However, the run home in the afternoon is terrible. The daily congestion around the Nudgee service centre during the afternoon peak hours is disgraceful. The merging of lanes is causing some major bottlenecks and this is without any accidents. The Government needs to escalate a solution to this mess and get it fixed quickly.

It is disappointing to see that there does not seem to have been a holistic approach to the development. Nothing has changed, except for two junctions, other than to move the problem. Where are the plans for the upgrade to the Gateway between Pine Rivers bridge and the Nudgee junction? Is there one? It has certainly needed 3 lanes for the last 5 years. By the time it is built, given the experience of the upgrade from Pine Rivers to Caboolture, we shall probably need 5 lanes. I am impressed with the speed with which the new development has been created, especially given that the Bruce Highway has been undergoing upgrades since 2000. It would therefore seem to be a better idea to create a second road parallel to the existing one from Nudgee to Deagon – it would be safer and faster for the construction crew and cause no further obstacles to the traffic on the existing road. So come on – tell us – what are the plans? When will we see the big machines moving more dirt?

Who in the heck plans these motorway upgrades in Brisbane? If you were the premier in any other australian state you'd get strung up for putting together such a badly designed system such as we witness on the new gateway (northbound) - I havent subjected myself to the horrors south of the bridge yet. The old gateway northbound (leaving Brisbane airport) now merges into the new gateway via ONE SINGLE LANE at the Nudgee service centre section. One lane boys and girls - ONE lane to handle not only the city traffic flow in the afternoon peak, but also all the airport traffic. Who exactly thought this would be a good idea? Almost seems like they either forgot they needed to merge the two highways or just plum ran out of cash (either is plausable). Agree with Jennell - lets get the pollies out between 4-6pm on weeknights and see the result!

Are there any plans to fix the next bottle neck heading north at the Entertainment Centre exit and further along at the Deagon exit? I can't find any details on those two stop points. Thanks heaps Beattie and Bligh. Remember we get what we vote for.

The effect of Gridlock

Brisbane's Western Bypass not going ahead

Acting Premier Paul Lucas and Transport Minister John Mickel announced last week that the proposed Brisbane Western Bypass is not going ahead. They have blamed poor projected traffic usage for the rethink. Instead, they have announced a series of proposed Tunnels and Road Upgrades closer to the city.

These will have a direct impact on the Northside of Brisbane, as most of them cover the Northern Suburbs, such as:

Tunnel from Toowong to Everton Park
Tunnel along Stafford Road from Everton Park to Kedron
Road widening from Stafford to Aspley (Trouts Road).

QUT's Carseldine Campus to Close

QUT recently confirmed the rumour that had been circulating throughout the Northside. That is, that they are closing the Carseldine Campus as from next year. The reason is the dwindling number of Students wanting to attend the campus.
This will be a loss for the Northside.

Northside Road Projects

As you would be well aware, there are 2 major road projects being undertaken at the moment which will have a huge impact on the Northside of Brisbane. One of these is the duplication of the Gateway Bridge and the other is the North-South Bypass Tunnel. Until these are completed, there is the possibility of them having an adverse effect on our own travels. To help alleviate this, they both have dedicated websites that not only keep you up to date, but you can sign up to recieve regular updates.

Local Council Elections

Well the local elections are over for another four years. We appreciated Greg Rowell coming in to speak to our members at the March Nightowls. Unfortunately, it would appear that it didn't help his cause and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

On a more positive note: Norm Wyndham ( a great supporter of the BNCC) won his seat and we fully expect to see him at our events for the next four years. Norm is extremely approachable, so if you have any issues that are affecting your business (or even your personal life), make sure you come along to one of our events and your sure to see Norm there.
