Fee-Free Training: An Opportunity for Small Business Growth

In an era where upskilling can make or break a business, TAFE is offering fee-free training across dozens of high-demand industries. This government-funded program represents a remarkable opportunity for small businesses to enhance their capabilities without the traditional financial barriers to professional development.

The BNCC recently had the opportunity to sit down with TAFE Queensland's team to understand exactly what these fee-free courses mean for our local business community. To get a practical grasp of the initiative's impact, we explored one of their newest offerings: the Battery Electric Vehicle Inspection Skill Set – a program that perfectly illustrates how fee-free training can help local businesses adapt to rapidly changing industries.

"We are witnessing a revolution in the electric vehicle landscape," explains Scott Lewis, TAFE Queensland Business Manager. "Industry experts project that Battery Electric Vehicles will constitute 50 percent of global car sales by 2033, climbing to nearly all new car sales by 2050. Local businesses need to be prepared for this transformation."

This isn't mere speculation – it represents a fundamental shift in the automotive industry that Queensland businesses must navigate. Recognising this challenge, the Queensland Government has developed a solution that's both practical and accessible: "This goes beyond simple skill acquisition – it's about ensuring business longevity," Lewis emphasises. "We're equipping automotive workers with the expertise to handle everything from basic maintenance to complex diagnostics on electric vehicles, with complete confidence and safety."

The program's design reflects a deep understanding of business realities. Concentrated into four intensive days, it is designed to strike a balance between comprehensive learning and minimal workplace disruption. Participants gain skills across working with high-voltage systems, safety protocols, and the sophisticated electronics characteristic of modern electric vehicles.

"The response has been remarkable, with enrolment from businesses across state lines," Lewis notes. "These skills are in universal demand throughout the industry."

For small business owners juggling resource constraints, programs like the Battery Electric Vehicle Inspection Skill Set offer a pragmatic solution to balance current operations with future preparedness. "By limiting the program to four days, we ensure businesses can maintain their momentum while building crucial capabilities for the future," Lewis explains.

With training centres in North Brisbane and Ipswich, this program is just one of a number of courses designed to support local industry. As electric vehicles reshape the automotive landscape, these fee-free TAFE initiatives have been established to support businesses to stay competitive and capable.

The range of fee-free programs available through TAFE Queensland extends well beyond automotive training. By eliminating the financial barriers traditionally associated with workforce development, this initiative makes professional growth accessible to businesses of all sizes.
